Find What Works for You..an Experiment in Meal Delivery

Our last blog post talked about how busy society is. We sometimes even use how busy we are individually as a badge of honor. There’s also so many things that are added to our daily schedule and rarely are things ever taken away. In the last post we talked about ways to simplify grocery shopping. Doing it in a way that can save you time and minimize stress. Today’s post is one step further, if you need it, and taking the meal planning out of some of your days! Most of us have heard of the meal delivery companies such as SunBasket, Blue Apron, Freshly, Green Blender and so on…have you tried them? I have done a few of them and I still utilize them when I’m in ....

  • Simplify Grocery Shopping

    Simplify Grocery Shopping

One of the biggest struggles I have, and that others express time and time again, is that, “Eating healthy would be easier if I had more time!” We are so busy! Our personal lives are busy. Our kid’s lives are busy. Our culture is so busy! Busy busy busy! We are constantly adding things to our schedules but rarely taking things off. We are told that if it is important to you, you’ll make time. But what if everything is important to you?! Oh man, I could write a whole book on this very subject! Not because I’m an expert, but because I am PASSIONATE ABOUT IMPROVING this area of my life. That’s not what this post is about though. I am going to break it ....

Happy Anniversary EXL Fitness & Performance

Happy anniversary EXL!! 10 years ago, EXL Fitness & Performance was born! Little did Mat know that this gym would become what it has! EXL is more than just a gym, it is a unique environment that is like a family for so many! Our culture is one to where everyone feels positive energy. They fee safe and a part of a team. We work out together in the most positive way I’ve ever seen. Everyone goes out of their way to help everyone, whether it be with technique, timing or just a smile. When I reached out to members to hear their perspective, it was very clear that people find more than just workouts here at EXL. The environment that Mat has facilitated is unique. Mat started his ....

  • I'm Sooo Sore!!

“I’m sooo sore!” This is a common comment I get when I ask a new client/camper how they are feeling a day or two after their first workout, or even a veteran client/camper a day or two after a new workout routine. This soreness is called “delayed onset muscle soreness” or DOMS. Science can not tell you what causes DOMS. Though science has now decided that it is NOT caused by lactic acid, which was a common belief. It seems DOMS takes about 24-48 hours to really set in. This soreness is commonly referred to as “stiffness” a day or two after an intense workout, particularly after a workout utilizing negative or slow repititions. DOMS is ....

  • 5 Most Common Reasons We Don't Succeed with Our New Year's Resolutions

It’s almost the middle of January so within the next couple of weeks most of us will be throwing in the towel on our New Year’s resolutions. As of this month I’ve been training clients for 22 years. Twelve of those years were at a large box gym where I was an independent trainer. At the big box gym, the gym would be packed every January one with people with New Year’s resolutions. Then, by the middle to the end of January it would return to the usual crowd. What happens during those first 2 or 3 weeks of January? Why is it so hard to stick to our New Year’s resolutions especially with fitness? It is estimated that over 95% of us fail at our New ....

  • We don't sell workouts! We sell accountability.

Here at EXL we have a proven system that delivers consistent and measurable results. It includes cutting-edge workouts using a variety of equipment as well as nutrition resources with recipes and meal plans. I’ve weeded through the research and studied the data in 20 plus years of personal training so you don’t have to…but ultimately you can do the same thing. You can read the books and attend the seminars and scrutinize the blogs and watch youtube videos and come up with a similar system. The information is out there. But, even with this proven training system, the most valuable tool I have in my personal training tool bag is ACCOUNTABILITY. Lack of ....

  • 5 Reasons an Athlete Needs a Personal Trainer

Today’s post is from one of our trainers, Cody Beyster. He’s a recent graduate from Utah State in Exercise Science. He’s been training here at EXL since February 2015, but has been training high school athletes for 5 years. He will be running our Jr. High and High School Sports Performance Program this summer. When I was about 6 years old I had the amazing opportunity of being around a lot of professional athletes. My stepdad, who is a personal trainer, focused much of his training on professional athletes when I was younger. I got to go with him to his sessions and watch him train these professional baseball, basketball, and hockey players. I remember one morning ....

  • You May Experience Some Discomfort

You may experience some discomfort. No, this isn’t the beginning of a list of side effects on some new drug. Rather, think of a time in your life when you overcame a major physical or mental challenge. Maybe that was finishing grad school, building a house, giving birth, or trying a new activity that scared you. (Sky diving, anyone?) Recall how hard that challenge was. How uncomfortable you felt. How you wanted to quit 100 times in the middle of it. Now think about the person you became afterwards. Thanks to that challenge, you’re stronger, wiser, and more insightful and experienced. Above all, you can point to that challenge and say, I survived ....

  • Consistency=Success

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve added to my blog. But, today’s topic seams relative to the time of year and to our current EXL Fitness Fit 4 Photos Transformation Challenge. Ah, the plaintive cry of the frustrated client. “IT’S NOT WORKING!” Some days, it feels like you’re spinning your wheels. The harder you mash down on that gas pedal, the more your tires sink into the mud. You’re stuck. But are you? Really? From my experience in working with hundreds of clients, I know that one thing determines success: consistency. The higher your consistency with workouts, nutrition habits, supplements and tracking , the better ....

  • Home and Travel Workouts for the Holidays

Every year dozens of clients ask for travel workouts or workouts they can do at home while enjoying the holidays with visiting family members. So, here ya go. Some of these workouts require some equipment and others do not. Here is the “12 Days of Christmas” workout we did in camp on Monday. The reps are performed in order like the 12 Days of Christmas song, so do 1 star jump, then 2 full plank jacks followed by 1 star jump. Then 3 skaters, 2 full planks jacks and 1 star jump. Followed by 4 push-ups, 3 skaters… 12 Days of Christmas 1. Star Jump 2. Full Plank Jacks 3. Skaters/side (6 total) 4. Push-ups 5. Straight-leg Sit-ups 6. Sumo ....
